Amsterdam through British eyes

Dear Amsterdam, I love you

Dear Amsterdam,

I never thought I would say this, but for about 30 seconds I thought about leaving you. Luckily, I came to my senses before I did anything drastic, and I am pretty goddamn relieved that I did

Your sunken canal houses which lean lazily against their neighbours, the lights that hit the canals at night, the gezellig cafes and cocktail bars, and your amazing Rembrandt and Van Gogh paintings mean that a little bit of my heart will always belong to you.

So far, in the three years that I have lived here, I’ve had my ups and downs. Right now, my personal life is pretty down – a break up with M, having to start over, find a new place, and find new friends – it isn’t easy – but I feel something in this city. A vibe that nothing can switch off, and a place which I have fallen in love with – which is why leaving is simply not an option.

I just wanted to say to you, and to myself – happy 3 year anniversary of me living here, and thankyou for reminding me of what’s important.

Amsterdam, I love you.

Ashley, great post! Sorry to hear about your break-up, but you’re a strong woman and you’ll do just fine on your own!!!! 🙂 Amsterdam has much more to offer to you in the near future, I’m sure about that! Muah!

Amsterdam has become your home and I believe has so much more to offer up to you than the UK even though you will always have a home and a loving welcome back here. We are never that far away. Your determination is an inspiration to me and others. Don’t give up and remember Dr Seuss xx

I’m late to read this but I just wanted to say I’m sorry to hear about your break up. I hope you are doing well and feeling a bit better already. I can only imagine how stressful it is to sort of start over.
I don’t know what your schedule looks like but if you’re ever in the mood for some brunch or coffee or anything with a fellow expat, you’ve got my email! In any case, good luck and courage with everything xx

Dear Amsterdam, I love you too! For whatever little time I have spent therre, I just loved every moment of it. It’s probably the most beautiful city in the world.
